Painted Pools:
a lens into subjectivity

The MFA project explores the notion of water as a metaphor for life.
The waterscape paintings are presented in a sequence that can be read as a narrative of the passage of life itself. They flow from abstraction to representational imagery where water is conceived as a primordial beginning; to a mental conception of waves; to an image that represents the experience of being physically thrust into the waves; and then to representational images of surfaces of water that explore, in varying ways, the way light and dark plays on the surface and beneath the waves of water.

Elemental:
Fire and Water

In What Painting Is, art historian
James Elkins writes ‘painting is alchemy’. Alchemy is the art of transmutation or transformation. Similarly, the quest to transform the material substance of paint, using the flame of an artist’s passion combined with their intellect, can be equated to alchemy. Fire and water, two elements that oppose each other, can be considered when brought together, to create wholeness...
A balanced polarity – an alchemical, royal marriage.

Water is life’s mater and matrix,
mother and medium. There is no life without water.
